1 ἤ-τοι
ἤ-τοι, entstanden aus ἦ τοι und aus ἤ τοι. – 1) Das aus ἦ τοι entstandene ἤτοι ist ursprünglich eine starke, durch das ἦ und durch das τοί, also doppelt ( παραλλήλως) ausgedrückte Betheuerung, "wahrlich, wahrlich"; aber schon bei Hom., welcher dies ἤτοι oft gebraucht, ist die Bedeutung sehr abgeschwächt, indem es nur als Synonymum von μέν erscheint, auf ein nachfolgendes "aber" vorausdeutend; Odyss. 2, 224 ἤτοι ὅ γ' ἃς εἰπὼν κατ' ἄρ' ἕζετο, τοῖσι δ' ἀνέστη Μέντωρ, = ὅ γε μὲν ἃς εἰπὼν κ. τ. ἑ.; häufig mit μέν verbunden, παραλλήλως, Iliad. 11, 373 ἤτοι ὁ μὲν ϑώρηκα Ἀγαστρόφου αἴνυτο – ὁ δὲ τόξου πῆχυν ἄνελκεν. Die Abschwächung der Bedeutung spiegelt sich wieder in der Zusammenziehung zu einem Worte und der Ersetzung des stärkeren Accents, des Circumflex, durch den schwächeren, den Acut. Soll irgendwo die ursprüngliche betheuernde Bedeutung festgehalten werden, so muß man getrennt schreiben ἦ τοι. Oft steht das Wort an der ersten Stelle des Satzes; es wird aber auch nachgesetzt, z. B. einem Pronomen, Il. 2, 813. 4, 237 Od. 12, 86, wo dann noch häufig δέ eingeschoben wird, Il. 12, 141. 18, 378 Hes. O. 335 u. sonst; τόν ῥ' ἤτοι Il. 18, 237; auch einer Partikel nachgesetzt, bes. ἀλλ' ἤτοι, 1, 140 u. sehr häufig; ἔνϑ' ἤτοι, Il. 16, 399. 463 Od. 3, 126. 141; ὄφρ' ἤτοι, Il. 23, 52 Od. 3, 419; ὡς ἤτοι, Od. 5, 24. 17, 157. – 2) Das andere ἤτοι ist aus dem disjunctiven ἤ und dem betheuernden τοί entstanden und hat disjunctive Bedeutung; es steht regelrecht nur im ersten Gliede, entsprechend dem Deutschen " entweder"; bei Hom. kommt dies ἤτοι noch gar nicht vor, vgl. Apoll. Lex. Hom. ed. Bekk. p. 85, 5 ἤτοι· καϑ' Ὅμηρον μὲν ἰσοδυναμεῖ τῷ μέν συνδέσμῳ, "ἤτοι ὅ γ' ἃς εἰπών", παρὰ δὲ ἡμῖν καὶ ἄλλοις ποιηταῖς διαζευκτικὸς σύνδεσμος, ἤτοι στρατεύσεις ἢ μένων ἔσῃ κακός". Pind. u. Folgde; ἤτοι – ἤ Soph. Ant. 1167 Tr. 149; ἤτοι φιλοῦσά γε ἢ καί τι σιγῶσα Eur. Ion 431; ἀλλ' ἤτοι κεῖνόν γε ἀπόλλυσϑαι ἢ σέ Her. 1, 11; καὶ αὐτοὶ ἤτοι κρίνομέν γε ἢ ἐνϑυμούμεϑα ὀρϑῶς τὰ πράγματα Thuc. 2, 40; ἤτοι κρύφα γε ἢ φανερῶς 6, 34; ἤτοι ἡδονῇ ἢ ὠφελείᾳ ἢ ἀμφοτέροις Plat. Gorg. 475 a. Selten entspricht sich ἤ – ἤτοι (Pind. N. 6, 8, verworfen B. A. 486, 311 u. ἤτοι – ἤτοι (einzeln bei Sp., wie Schol. Ap. Rh. 4, 1239. Vgl. zu Greg. Cor. p. 643). – Die Grammatiker brauchen ἤτοι häufig bei der Erkl. eines Wortes durch ein anderes, nämlich, das heißt, wie ἤγουν.
